Who doesn’t love pizza? This delicious dish is great for any occasion, from a romantic dinner to those lazy days when you want to order takeout and chill on the couch. One of the things I love the most about pizza is how simple it is to make! You don’t need a wood-fired oven or to be an experienced cook to make delicious pizza at home.

And, believe it or not, homemade pizza is delicious and healthy. When you make your pizza at home, you can choose healthier toppings, such as ground beef and veggies, which make for a nutrient-packed meal. 

Homemade pizza dough recipe

The store-bought dough works fine, but homemade pizza dough is delicious and healthier. The homemade dough doesn’t have any conservatives and uses only simple ingredients. Plus, it’s effortless to make!

To make the best pizza dough recipe, you’ll need only six ingredients:

  • 3/4 cup of lukewarm water
  • 1 package of active dry yeast (approximately 7 grams)
  • 2 cups of all-purpose flour, plus more for kneading (for a healthier pizza, you can use whole wheat flour instead)
  • 2 teaspoons of sugar
  • 1 teaspoon of salt
  • 3 tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil

To make this homemade pizza dough, you’ll have to follow these simple steps:

  1. Pour the water into a small bowl and add the yeast. Let it rest until the yeast fully dissolves, about 5 minutes.
  2. Mix the flour, sugar, and salt in a bowl.
  3. Slowly pour in the water and yeast mixture along with the olive oil.
  4. Mix it with your hands until it holds its shape. 
  5. Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface and knead until smooth. You can add more flour if it’s very sticky. Keep needing for 10 minutes.
  6. Transfer the dough to a large bowl coated lightly with oil. Cover it and let the dough rest until it doubles in size, about 1 hour.
  7. Once the dough is ready, take the dough out and roll it into a large circle and start making your pizza. 
  8. Transfer to a baking tray and add the sauce and the toppings.
  9. Bake at 250°C (or 475° F) until the crust has brown, about 15 to 20 minutes.

You can make the dough one day ahead and keep it in an airtight container in the fridge until you’re ready to use it!

Homemade tomato sauce recipe

Although you can buy pre-made sauce, your pizzas will taste even better if you make homemade pizza sauce. Here’s a simple recipe for a delicious, homemade tomato sauce:


  • 2 garlic cloves, finely chopped
  • 1 can of crushed tomatoes
  • 2 tablespoons of olive oil
  • 1½ teaspoons of salt
  • ½ cup of fresh basil leaves


  1. Add the garlic, tomatoes, oil, and salt to a pot and boil.
  2. Reduce the temperature and add the basil leaves.
  3. Simmer the sauce for 10 minutes.
  4. Let it cool down.

You can also use this marinara sauce recipe or your go-to tomato sauce! And suppose you find yourself with leftover pizza sauce. In that case, you can always freeze it to make pizza on another occasion or make this creamy tomato pasta.

Hawaiian pizza

This is one of the most controversial but healthy pizzas you can make. To make this, you’ll need 3 ingredients:

  • A cup of shredded mozzarella
  • A cup of chopped pineapple
  • 6 slices of turkey ham

Add all the ingredients to the pizza crust and put it in the oven! I also like adding some chopped jalapeño for a spicy touch! 

Arugula, cherry tomatoes, and prosciutto pizza

This pizza is so simple but delicious. To make it, add halved cherry tomatoes, prosciutto slices, and some shredded mozzarella to the pizza before putting it in the oven. Once it’s baked, add the arugula and top it with this balsamic vinegar dressing.

Veggie pizza

This is a great idea to use all the veggies in your fridge while also making a delicious meal. A veggie pizza can have any vegetables you like, such as broccoli, zucchini, carrots, bell peppers, tomatoes, and spinach. Mix all the veggies in a bowl, season them, and put them in your pizza. Then cover them with cheese and put the pizza in the oven.

Grilled chicken pizza

Grilled chicken makes the best topping for a protein-packed pizza. I like to add this grilled lemon chicken breasts, cut into thin slices, along with onions, bell peppers, spinach, and mozzarella to my homemade pizza.

White Pizza

Pizza Bianca is simple, delicious, and great for any occasion. You can make the sauce from mozzarella, parmesan, ricotta cheese, salt, pepper, and oregano. I like to top it with caramelized onions, shrimp, and fresh spinach. 

Mushroom pizza

This pizza is great for vegans and vegetarians! You’ll need a batch of sauteed mushrooms, spinach, and your preferred cheese to make it. Then, add the sauce and all the toppings to the pizza dough and bake it for 15 minutes. 

Pepperoni pizza

Everyone loves this classic pizza, so why not make it healthier? Adding turkey pepperoni and low-fat cheese such as cheddar or provolone makes for a delicious but healthy pizza.  

Sausage and pepper pizza

For this pizza, I like to use this air-fryer Italian sausage recipe. Then, I add the sausage, onions, and peppers to the prepared dough and sprinkle shredded cheese. This effortless pizza is delicious and also packed with protein.

Vegan pizza

For this Mediterranean-inspired pizza, you’ll need the following:

  • 1 cup of Cherrie tomatoes, halved
  • 1 can of artichoke hearts, sliced
  • 1/4 cup black or green olives, halved
  • 3/4 cup of cooked chickpeas
  • 1/4 small red onion, thinly sliced
  • Vegan parmesan cheese to taste
  • Olive oil

Add all these ingredients to the prepared pizza dough and bake it for 10 to 15 minutes. Once it’s out of the oven, cut it into pieces and sprinkle some parmesan cheese and olive oil.

Mini pizzas

You can still enjoy all the food you like when eating healthy. The trick is to eat all foods in moderation. And mini pizzas are great for this. 

By dividing the dough into 6 to 10 small-sized balls, you can make individual pizzas with any toppings you want. They’ll be delicious but also very healthy!
