Whenever I want something quick but tasty for breakfast, I churn out one of my favorite simple toast recipes. What I love about toast is how easy it is to make. You can have a balanced but delicious breakfast with only 10 minutes and a couple of pantry-staple ingredients. Plus, you can eat these every day of the week without getting bored.

What you need to make a simple toast at home

I firmly believe that cooking doesn’t have to be complicated to be delicious. That’s why I love simple but tasty recipes so much. And, trust me, this variety of simple toast recipes is so easy to make but so good you won’t be having anything else for breakfast or lunch once you taste them.

You don’t need fancy equipment to make a toast at home. However, some appliances that come in handy are an oven or a toaster oven, a good-quality kitchen knife, a chopping block, a non-stick pan, and a set of spoons.

As for ingredients, the fundamental things you’ll need include:

  • Bread. I opt for sourdough bread, but you can choose any bread you like, from baguettes to croissants. You can even use gluten-free bread if you want!
  • Fruit. If you want to make healthy toast recipes, adding fresh fruit is best. I usually have bananas, blueberries, apples, and avocados. But you can use any fresh or dried fruits you like.
  • Veggies. Adding veggies to your toast is the way to go if you prefer a savory breakfast. I like to add cherry tomatoes, mushrooms, carrots, and peppers.
  • Spreads. These are the base of the toast. Anything can work, from smashed avocado or ricotta cheese to homemade honey butter or your preferred nut butter. 
  • Toppings. Some toppings I like to use are herbs, nuts and seeds, and even chocolate chips. But, of course, it all depends on the kind of toast I’m making.

Some of my favorite simple toast recipes 

The secret of all easy toast recipes is the bread. When making a toast at home, I like prepping all my ingredients beforehand. Then, I toast bread in the oven and assemble everything. This way, the bread will still be warm and crunchy when I bite into it.

There are so many different kinds of toast you can make at home. Below you’ll find some of my favorite recipes.

Sweet toast recipe for breakfast

Whenever I’m craving something sweet for breakfast, I take a piece of toasted bread and cover it with any of the following ingredients:

  • Jam
  • Nut butter
  • Chocolate-hazelnut spread
  • Honey
  • Greek yogurt 
  • Pumpkin pureé
  • Applesauce

And then, add some fresh fruit and toppings like coconut flakes, chia seeds, chocolate chips, or roasted pecans.

Avocado toast recipe

Who doesn’t love a good avocado toast? I know I do! My go-to recipe goes as follows:

  1. In a bowl, smash the avocado with a teaspoon of lime juice and a pinch of salt.
  2. Spread the smashed avocado on top of the toasted bread.
  3. Add a poached or sunny-side-up egg on top and sprinkle with chili flakes.
  4. Enjoy!

Ricotta toast recipes

Ricotta cheese is an excellent source of healthy fats and protein. That’s why I love it on toast. Of course, I usually add apples and honey to my ricotta toast. But you can also make it savory by adding smoked salmon or prosciutto slices on top instead of the apples.

Mushroom toast recipe

To make this toast, firstly, I add some smashed avocado or ricotta cheese to a piece of toasted bread, depending on what I’m craving and what I have in my pantry. Then, I prepare sautéed mushrooms with garlic that I add to the toast and finish it with fresh green onions.

Smoked salmon on toast recipe

For this toast, I like to keep it simple, making sure the salmon is the star of the dish.  I’ve noticed bagels work best for this recipe, so I usually grab a bagel, cut it in half, and toast it in the oven. Then, I put a good amount of cream cheese on top, add some pieces of thinly-sliced smoked salmon, and top it with black pepper and salt.

Egg toast recipes

Eggs are a breakfast staple, so it makes sense to put them on toast. Here are some of my favorite combinations:

  • A layer of smashed avocado is topped with scrambled eggs and garnished with bacon.
  • Toasted garlic bread, ricotta cheese, omelet with spinach and tomato, ham, and cheese. I garnish it with chili flakes and roasted sesame dressing. 

Simple butter toast

There’s nothing so simple yet so delicious as butter toast. To take it up a notch, I use homemade flavored butter, like honey butter or garlic butter, and top it with any desired fruits or veggies.

Pizza toast recipe

This is another recipe where I use bagels instead of a traditional bread loaf. I cut the bagel in half, add some tomato sauce, spread the pepperoni and cheese on top, and put it in the oven for five minutes. This makes for an extra cheesy toast.

Classic bruschetta recipe

This classic Italian recipe is excellent for lunch or dinner. To make it, I slice a baguette and toast it in the oven until crispy. Then, I top it with sliced mozzarella, roasted cherry tomatoes, fresh basil, and homemade balsamic vinaigrette.

How to create healthy toast recipes at home

What I love about these simple toast recipes is how versatile they are. You can alter these recipes however you want, and you’ll still have a delicious meal. That’s why they’re great for vegetarians, vegans, and people with other dietary restrictions.

Another great thing about toast is that you can have it anytime. I love having sweet toast for breakfast, but when I don’t feel like cooking something too complicated, I make savory toast for lunch or even dinner. Plus, some of these simple toast recipes are my go-to when I have guests over but don’t have much time to cook.
