Outdoor patios are often overlooked when designing and decoring a home, but they can alter the overall look of your house. A well-decored patio can boost the resale value of your property. It can also help you create a space to relax and feel closer to nature.

Decorating your patio doesn’t have to be complicated. You can make many small changes to improve its look and feel without spending money on new furniture or decorations. In addition, there are plenty of resources and videos online that you can follow along. Below you’ll find some of the most valuable tips I’ve seen and some pieces of inspiration.

Simple tips to improve the look of your outdoor patio

An outdoor patio is a paved area added to a backyard that sits directly on the ground, unlike a deck. Patios can be made from stone, concrete, pea gravel, tiles, or rocks. They are a great space to place outdoor furniture and other cute decorations. If you want to improve the look of your patio, but don’t know where to start, here are some simple things you can do:

  • Add outdoor furniture. A couple of rattan chairs, an outdoor loveseat, and a couple of tables will make your patio go from a space you don’t often use to where you can sit and wind down after a long day.
  • Add some greenery. Decorating your patio with potted plants is a simple but effective way to make the space feel full of life. There’s a great variety of hard-to-kill plants you can choose from, but you can also use synthetic plants or flowers.
  • Add some lighting. Good lighting will ensure you use your patio often, whether it is to have dinner outside or host a gathering with friends and family. A good set of string lights or fairy lights can genuinely change the overall aspect of your patio.
  • Think about privacy. Adding curtains or a DIY privacy screen can make an outdoor patio feel like a secluded oasis. Not only will this give you more privacy, but it’s also a great way of adding some personal touch to your patio.
  • Don’t forget about the decor. Just like any other room in your house, a patio needs some decorations. Some patio decor accessories you can add include wall art, small statues, and a water fountain.

How to decorate an outdoor patio

If you want to decorate your outdoor patio but don’t know where to start, you could use some inspiration. Below you’ll find some simple ideas you can use for your next exterior design project.

Black and white patio decor

As you’ve probably guessed, this trend is all about playing with black-and-white decorations. To create a good contrast of colors, I would opt for black furniture, like a chaise lounge outdoor chair, a small coffee table, some white sofa cushions, and a set of outdoor globe string lights.

Farmhouse style is all about practicality, simplicity, and rustic charm. To create a rustic but cozy-looking patio, you can add vintage wooden furniture, like an outdoor dining table and chairs, wall-hanging planters, and even a swing chair. You can add your personal touch with patio decor ornaments such as chair covers, plants, candles, and a base with freshly-cut flowers.

Tropical patio decor

You’ll have to invest in some outdoor plants and trees to make your patio feel like a tropical destination. Some tropical greenery you can use includes:

  • Palms such as the chusan palm of the cabbage palm
  • Ferns
  • Bamboo
  • Sabal minor
  • Vines

In addition to plants, a wooden pergola, a set of swing chairs, and some globe-string lights are also some great additions that can transform your patio into a tropical paradise.

Bohemian patio decor

For a boho patio decor, you’ll have to focus on choosing furniture, decorations, and art piece with vibrant colors. Couch cushions and chair covers with funky-looking patterns are always a great choice. In addition to this, don’t forget to add as many plants as possible and some fairy lights. As for the furniture, anything can work for this decor style. However, I would opt for something comfortable, like a lovely chaise lounge or a hammock.

Indie patio decor

The indie decor style is driven by personality rather than by a set of rules. In other words, it’s all about having fun and adding a personal touch to your home. Add some retro or vintage furniture and a dash of color with decorations like cushions, statues or figurines, signs or posters, and plants for an indie-looking patio. Just add any items that reflect your personality best.

Modern patio decor

You’ll want to focus on maintaining a neutral color palette for a modern patio. Colors like beige, black, white, and gray work best. Another important aspect of this decor style is the use of different textures. To achieve this, you can add furniture made from different materials (like wood, plastic, or concrete), chair covers, cushions, and some plants. Other good additions include fairy lights, candles, and a concrete fire pit.

Cozy patio decor

Add some comfortable furniture, like a chaise lounge or outdoor chairs, with cushions and throw blankets to make your patio cozier. Other great additions include a pergola or privacy screens, fairy lights, a fire pit, candles, and your favorite potted plants. A cozy patio is great for lounging after a long day or hosting small reunions.

As you can see, there are plenty of ways to decorate an outdoor patio; it doesn’t have to be expensive. You can start working with things you already have, like old furniture and decorations. You can also make DIY outdoor decorations. The key is to use imagination and work with what you already have at home.
