Stress is an ever-constant fixture in our everyday lives. It’s normal to feel overwhelmed with everything you’ve got to do, whether at work, school, or home. Unfortunately, this can often lead to forgetting to care for our physical and mental well-being. A great way to deal with stress and take better care of yourself, it’s to start practicing self-care.

According to the World Health Organization, self-care is what people do for themselves to establish and maintain health and prevent and deal with illness. It includes hygiene, nutrition, living conditions, and overall lifestyle.

The importance of self-care

Practicing self-care is proven to have many beneficial effects on our physical and mental health. For example, it can reduce symptoms of anxiety, depression, and stress. And some simple self-care habits, such as establishing a bedtime routine or working out at least half an hour daily, can improve our concentration, self-esteem, confidence, energy levels, and sleep pattern.

Moreover, self-care has been clinically proven to reduce the risk of heart disease, stroke, and cancer. Although it can be challenging, establishing a self-care routine can improve your health and help you live a healthier lifestyle!

5 Simple self-care habits to include in your daily routine

According to the International Self-Care Foundation, there are seven pillars of self-care. These are knowledge and health literacy, mental well-being, physical activity, healthy eating, risk avoidance, and good hygiene. Below you’ll find 5 simple daily habits you can incorporate into your everyday routine.

Walk more

According to the Mayo Clinic, we should aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate physical activity per day. A great way to reach this goal is to walk more frequently. You can do this by taking a short walk after lunch, taking your dog for a walk before going to work, or walking instead of driving short distances.

Create a bedtime routine

Creating a bedtime routine can improve your sleep by helping you relax before going to bed. Some simple habits you can incorporate into your bedtime routine are the following.

  • Set a bedtime and try to stick to a consistent sleep schedule.
  • Don’t use electronics for 30 minutes before going to bed.
  • Stretch, meditate, or listen to your favorite music to relax.
  • Ensure your bedroom is quiet, dark, and cool for better sleep.

Eat more fruits and veggies

According to the CDC, adults should eat at least one and a half cups of fruit and two cups of vegetables daily to maintain a healthy diet. Eating more fruits and veggies has plenty of health benefits, including weight management and a lesser risk of chronic illnesses.

You can start small, adding only small quantities of fruits and veggies to all your meals. Other ways to eat more fruits and vegetables are to eat more vegan and vegetarian meals and to use canned and frozen options.

Make time for yourself

Dedicating time to yourself is great for self-improvement and stress relief. You can save some short time every day or a whole day every month just for yourself and your interests. This is an excellent opportunity to read a book from your to-be-read list or to pursue a new hobby!


Meditation is an excellent way of reducing stress levels and relaxing. You can meditate for only a few minutes each day to get started. Some types of meditation that are great for beginners are deep breathing, mindfulness, yoga, and even journaling!

Practicing self-care is one of the easiest ways to improve mental health. You can start small, adding one or two small habits to your daily routine, then create a more extensive self-care routine you can practice daily!
